Asian Art in Canada: An Introduction to the players and institutions that shaped Asian Art Collections in Canada

Presented by Orientations magazine

A lecture by Anthony Wu at 2-3pm March 12, 2016 at the Asian Art Fair.

Bohemian National Hall, 321 E 73rd Street, New York NY 10021

Canada has a rich history of collecting Asian antiques and some of North America’s largest collections of Asian Art in its museums. This lecture will provide an overview of the various collectors, curators, benefactors, dealers, and institutions that played a key role in shaping Canada’s involvement with Asian art over the past 100 years, with a particular emphasis on Toronto and Montreal. Important figures will be examined such as Sir William Cornelius Van Horne (1843-1915), president of the Canadian Pacific Railway, Sir Byron Edmund Walker (1848-1924), president of the Canadian Bank of Commerce, George Crofts (1871-1925), a fur trader and antique dealer, and Bishop William C White (1873-1960), the first curator of the East Asian Gallery of the Royal Ontario Museum. Institutions such as the Royal Ontario Museum, Montreal Museum of Fine Art, and Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art will be overviewed.
